Kitesurfing or Kiteboarding

Kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, involves riding on a small surfboard or kiteboard and getting yourself propelled across a shallow body of water by a controllable power kite. The rider or kitesurfer is attached to the board with foot straps or bindings and uses straps attached to the power kite to control it.

In Boracay, Bulabog Beach, found on the eastern part of the island, is where you will find most kitesurfers. This beach has made Boracay famous as the kiteboarding and windsurfing capital of Asia because of its wide expanse of shallow water and windy conditions suitable to wind-dependent water sports.

Kitesurfing in Boracay is taking over as the number one sport at Bulabog Beach. This sport is still considered risky by many, but modern innovations in kite design incorporating a safety release mechanism, together with comprehensive rider education focusing on safety has made this sport safer and a lot more manageable today.

Kiteboarding at Bulabog Beach Boracay

Sirenna's comments: (updated on Sep 4, 2005 & Oct 2, 2005, in VirtualTourist): Whether you want to join in or just watch, in high season these activities go on at the eastern side of the island where it is more windy. In low season when the wind changes, they all come over to White Beach. Bulabog_Beach is quieter than White Beach, less tourists and vendors about. For kiting lessons, contact Ocean Republic or Green Yard.

Kiteboarding is taking off in a big way in Boracay. Head over to Bulabog Beach on the eastern side of the island to watch the show, and call in for a chat with the guys from Ocean Republic. They will be happy to advise you on how to get started, and you can rent or buy kiting equipment from them.
