When my wife, Marlene, and I decided to set up our Boracay website, we had no idea at all about website building. Our Quest for a Better Lifestyle

My wife Marlene and I started our quest for a better and more relaxed lifestyle after learning about Internet Marketing from a seminar we attended in Australia. A US-based website hosting company -- which will remain anonymous -- came to Sydney to give a seminar on website building and Internet Marketing.

We received a couple of unsolicited tickets in the mail to attend a FREE Internet Marketing Conference. A glossy brochure came with offer plus a FREE Business Organizer to boot! We were intrigued by the prospect of achieving our financial goals and dreams that we gave in to our curiosity and decided to attend.

The Glib Presentation

A free lunch and very glib presentation by one of the speakers, followed by an offer of a "cheap" $50 fee to attend another whole day seminar enticed us to sign up. In that "follow up" seminar, the presenter introduced us to the concept of "affiliate marketing" -- which we loved -- whereby you get a commission from a company when visitors to your website click on a hyperlink.

Clicking transfers your visitor to the advertiser's website where she is invited to buy their product or service, or to sign up for a subscription -- in which case you get a commission from the advertiser, and all this without any selling effort on your part. After another convincing presentation, we were "invited" to invest in six websites (we later returned three) which were "guaranteed" (with the usual disclaimer) to put easy money in our bank account "even while we're in bed sleeping at night, or away on holidays..." All for a "minimal" few $'000's -- PROVIDED we "...put in the necessary effort to make the business succeed!"

Practically Useless Tools

No doubt, the necessary tools to build the websites were all available to us. The support was there as well, as promised. We only needed to do the work. Piece of cake, right? --- Wrong! How? What do we do? Where do we start? There was no step-by-step tutorial to guide us through the process.

All the tools in the world are useless to you, if you don't know how to use them. You can't even ask for support because you don't know what you really don't know. You feel embarrassed to ask because you don't want to look stupid, so you end up doing nothing.
