Second Largest Archipelago

Over 7,100 islands make up this second largest archipelago in the world (after Indonesia).

Fewer than 3,000 of these islands are inhabited.

Population & Resources

This country has an estimated population of 90 million (c.2006).

Two-thirds of the people make their living from farming.

The three main crops are palay (unhusked rice), coconut, and corn.

These crops account for 80% of all farmlands.

The country is also the second largest producer (next to Indonesia again) of copra (dried external coconut kernel or meat) and coconut products in the world.
