Over 7,100 islands make up this second largest archipelago in the world (after Indonesia). Fewer than 3,000 of these islands are inhabited. This country has an estimated population of 90 million (c.2006). Two-thirds of the people make their living from farming.
The three main crops are palay (unhusked rice), coconut, and corn. These crops account for 80% of all farmlands. The country is also the second largest producer (next to Indonesia again) of copra (dried external coconut kernel or meat) and coconut products in the world.
Boracay Island, located in the Western Visayas Region, 2 km off the northwest tip of Panay Island, is the most popular holiday destination. This is where the world famous Boracay White Beach is located. This 4 km long beach is considered by leading travel writers as one of the best in the world, with its powdery white sand and warm clear waters.
